                                     New Archives Hours

Effective October 1, 2010 the hours available for public visitation
to the Georgia Archives will change to Thursday through Saturday 8:30
a.m. to 5:00pm. This is an unfortunate action we must take to meet
the difficult budget environment facing all State Agencies.

With the reduction in public hours the Archives staff will now be
deployed to fulfill different functions on different days. When the
Archives is open to the public, most or all employees will serve the
public in the Reference Room. When the Archives is closed to the public,
most or all of the employees will work with state agencies to bring
records into the Archives, catalog them, and shelve them. To provide
better and timelier service for research requests outside the core
duties of the State Archives, i.e. genealogy requests, a list of other
sources of information can be provided. In this way the Archives will
maintain its critical functions with reduced staffing.

Lunch and Learn lectures, normally held on the second Tuesday of each
month, have been rescheduled (where possible) for the second Thursday
of each month. Please see the web site for a revised schedule.

                   New Web Search Engine

New search engine which includes Georgia web site information

Hi all -
Most of you know that Karen and I have been maintaining http://www.linkpendium.com/ click here
which is a 9,175,027-link index to genealogy on the Web.
We’ve decided to move on to the obvious next step of using those links
to seed state-by-state “Genealogical Google” search engines.

Right now, we’ve done four states (GA, MD, NY, OH) and are adding
about one state every day.

The beta-test search engines are at: http://laboratory.linkpendium.com/ Click here
You’re welcome to try them and comment on them. Please don’t be too
painfully critical; this is our first cut at building search engines
and you can expect things to improve as we gain experience.
Cheers, B.

     Ken Thomas Notes Web Site

This information lifted from Ken Thomas’ column for Oct. 24th.
The ProGenealogists organization has published a list of the fifty
most popular genealogy websites for 2010, but some are free, some
by subscription. To find these go to
 www.progenealogists.com  Click here
and then
search for “websites” and you will find the list. They are even ranked
as to how popular or useful they are. This website has a lot more
material on it, be sure to check out the “Free Stuff” for some very
useful items as well.

             Ken Thomas Requests Halloween Information

Ken Thomas is looking for articles and information about Halloween
to be used in his column on the fifth Sunday of October.

If anyone has any Halloween Ideas/angles let me know ASAP as I will
have to write that within the next week or so--since writing the fifth
column upsets my schedule. - Ken

          The Hoffer Indexing Schedule

On September 12th the Rockdale County Genealogical Society Committee
approved the disposition of Elwanda Hoffer’s genealogy collection.
Her collection of books, magazines and other memorabilia will be placed
in the LDS Family History Center in Conyers and accessible to the
public during their normal business hours. The LDS Church will provide
additional shelves, storage cabinets and whatever else is needed to
preserve her work. The RCGS retains custodial rights to the collection
in the event it deems it necessary to move Ms. Hoffer’s collection
to another location. Local LDS leaders have approved both the RCGS’s
custodial rights position and the expenses necessary to house the
collection.

Beginning this Friday and for successive Mondays and Fridays we would
like to begin the process of indexing the collection. We will work
in groups of three or more until the work is complete. If you are
interested in this effort please respond with a time convenient to
your schedule. The Center is not open during these times thereby allowing
us to expedite the process. For October the indexing times will be:

Friday, October 1st - 9:00 A.M. - Noon
Monday, October 4th - 1:00-4:00 P.M. Friday, October 8th - 9:00 A.M.
- Noon
Monday, October 11th - 9:00 A.M. - Noon, 1:00-4:00 P.M. Friday, October
15th - 9:00 A.M. - Noon, 1:00-4:00 P.M.
Monday, October 18th - 9:00 A.M. - Noon, 1:00-4:00 P.M. Friday, October
22nd - 9:00 A.M. - Noon, 1:00-4:00 P.M.
Monday, October 25th - 9:00 A.M. - Noon, 1:00-4:00 P.M. Friday, October
29th - 9:00 A.M. - Noon, 1:00-4:00 P.M.

This is a sizeable collection and we will do all we can to provide
a suitable place in her memory. If you have any questions or concerns
please let me know.

Sincerely,
